A Poem of Rememberance

The poem, Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickle Received from a Friend called Felicity, I thought was quite an interesting poem. It also had an interesting title. I thought that the title was quite long and may easily confuse the reader. This poem was not an easy read, it required a lot of re-reading to understand. I think that it had to do with what a great summer was like when they were younger, because it says, when unicorns were still possible, but how watermelons were always the highlight of the summer.

The poem slightly reminded me of my elementary school summer days when I would have a new scrape on my knee every day, eating juicy red and yellowmeat watermelons, trips to the farmer’s market, and playing in the hot sun all day long. Those were the days!

“What is that stuff called fluoride?”

Fluoride Cartoon

What is fluoride? Fluoride is an anion of fluorine. Fluoride is often used in toothpaste, mouthwash, and is sometimes put in water to prevent tooth decay. Some people disapprove of having fluoride in their water for many different reasons. Fluoride has not always been safe. Many technological advances had to be made before fluoride could be put in toothpaste and mouthwash, even though it was already in water.

Some people disapprove of adding fluoride to drinking water for many reasons. Some reasons are because people may be allergic to fluoride and also because too much of it could ruin their teeth and their body, because too much of anything can be damaging. It would be difficult for someone who was allergic to fluoride because they would have to boil all the water, which could be very inconvenient. It has been proven in many cases that, even in small amounts, fluoride can be damaging to your body. Too much fluoride can cause fluorosis, which is a condition when you have too much fluoride in your body. There are different types of fluorosis, including dental and skeletal. Before fluoride could be widely used in toothpaste and mouthwash, fluoride had to be mixed with a compatible abrasive to put in mouthwash and toothpaste. Even before fluoride was added to toothpaste and mouthwash, people were getting fluorosis from too much fluoride in their water. I am against having fluoride in water for some of the same reasons. I feel that when I drink water out of the faucet, it should be pure, with the exception of chemicals that were used to purify the water and minerals naturally found in the ground. In some countries there is fluoride naturally occurring in the water, so fluoride does not need to be added to it. Although I would not like to have fluoride in water, I do think that it would be a great advantage to have it in toothpaste. It would be more of an advantage to have fluoride in toothpaste than in water because there are moderate amounts in each usage of toothpaste, but a person who drinks a lot of water may get too much fluoride in his body.

Skeletal Fluorosis 2 Dental Fluorosis 2

I understand that fluoride was added to water to aid in prevention of tooth decay, especially for those who do not receive adequate dental care. Although it is an easy way to help a large amount of people, it is hard to regulate the amount of fluoride each person receives. In an effort to prevent one problem, tooth decay, from becoming widespread another problem, dental and skeletal fluorosis, has been created. Fluoride in water could help most help the poor and disadvantaged. Due to cost, this group would be the more likely to drink a lot of the water containing fluoride, making them more susceptible to dental and skeletal fluorosis. Since we have now made the technological advances to add fluoride to toothpaste and mouthwash, I discourage adding fluoride to water and encourage the use of toothpaste with fluoride. It’s the best of both worlds!
